Mr. Wildside fun fact
Highland cattle wear a built-in double coat
Highland cattle come from the rough, wet Scottish Highlands, and their coat is built for it.
It has two layers: long, oily outer guard hairs, some reaching about 13 inches, that shed rain and snow, and a soft, downy undercoat that traps warm air against the body.
That insulation lets the breed stay warm without carrying the thick layer of body fat many cattle need, which is one reason Highlanders are happy to live outdoors all year.
