How Bigfoot got its name in 1958

This one is about a legend. The facts are about the history of the story, not proof that the creature is real.

The name "Bigfoot" dates to 1958. That August, Jerry Crew, a bulldozer operator with a logging crew at Bluff Creek in Northern California, found huge humanlike footprints, almost 16 inches long, pressed into a freshly graded road.

The crew started calling the mystery track-maker "Big Foot." Crew made a plaster cast, and that October he appeared holding it on the front page of the Humboldt Times, where columnist Andrew Genzoli helped turn "Bigfoot" into a household word.

The twist came decades later. After Crew's boss, Ray Wallace, died in 2002, his family said he had made the tracks with carved wooden feet as a prank.

Whether that settles anything depends on who you ask. Mr. Wildside just thinks a 16-inch foot deserves a very large Christmas stocking.
