Snowy owls hunt in daylight, unlike most owls

Most owls are night hunters, but snowy owls are active by day, especially at dawn and dusk.

That makes sense for a bird that nests on the Arctic tundra, where summer brings weeks of nonstop daylight. In the Arctic winter the opposite happens, and snowy owls keep hunting through long stretches of near-total darkness.

They're built for the cold, too. Their feet are covered in thick feathers that insulate them like a pair of fluffy slippers.

A snowy owl glides low over a moonlit snowfield, golden eyes bright, under a huge full moon and a line of snow-heavy pines.
