The 1951 footprint photo that made the Yeti famous

This one is about a legend. The facts are about the history of the story, not proof that the creature is real.

On 8 November 1951, mountaineers Eric Shipton and Michael Ward, with Sherpa Sen Tensing, found a trail of huge, humanlike footprints in the snow on the Menlung Glacier near the Nepal-Tibet border.

Shipton photographed the prints, two of them with an ice axe beside them for scale. Ward later wrote that each print was about as long as his boot, roughly 12 to 13 inches, and nearly twice as wide.

The photos went around the world and turned the Yeti from a Himalayan legend into an international mystery.

Science has weighed in since. A 2017 DNA study of supposed Yeti samples found that they came from Asian bears, plus one dog. Our Yeti is sticking with the scarf, either way.
