Mr. Wildside fun fact
That famous Highland cow fringe has a name: the dossan
The long forelock hanging over a Highland cow's eyes is called the dossan.
It isn't just a great hairdo. Together with long eyelashes, it shields the eyes from wind, driving rain and flies, and breeders note that eye problems such as pinkeye are uncommon in the breed.
Some owners trim the dossan so their cattle can see better, especially for shows. Most of the time, though, it stays gloriously shaggy.
Wear the Highland Cow Christmas
A shaggy Highland coo trudges through a snowy farmyard at blue-hour twilight, with holly on one horn, a robin on the other and a red barn behind.
